US-based functional ingredients provider Nutraland USA has announced self-affirmed generally recognised as safe (GRAS) status for its plant-based melatonin ingredient Somato.
Somato is said to be the world’s first whole food-derived phytomelatonin extracted from tomatoes, using the company’s in-house, gentle extraction process.
It offers a sustainable, plant-based source of melatonin without involving synthetic solvents or conversion, an appealing option for consumers seeking natural sleep support.
Somato is already available in several markets, particularly in regions where synthetic melatonin is regulated as a drug and only available by prescription.
Nutraland USA chief science officer Gene Bruno said: “We are thrilled to achieve this milestone for Somato and see it as a major step forward in making natural sleep solutions accessible to a broader audience.
“This accomplishment validates our dedication to developing safe and effective ingredients that are derived from sustainable sources. With self-affirmed GRAS status, Somato is now positioned to lead the next wave of natural melatonin products, not only in the US but globally.”
Nutraland is currently partnering with several global partners to commercialise products containing Somato across Europe and Asia-Pacific.
The company said that achieving self-affirmed GRAS status for Somato is a critical step as it strengthens the market position of its phytomelatonin product in the US.
Also, the GRAS designation confirms that Somato is safe for use in food and dietary supplements, and encourages more brands to adopt the ingredient in their product lines. Furthermore, Somato provides an ideal solution for brands seeking to differentiate themselves with a plant-based melatonin offering that is both effective and sustainable, said Nutraland.
