Tetra Pak has introduced a new protein ingredient derived from sunflower, targeting food and beverage manufacturers seeking to expand their plant-based ranges.

The sunflower-based protein joins the company’s existing ingredient portfolio and is designed for use in applications such as plant-based iced coffee, yoghurt alternatives and ready-to-drink protein drinks.

The food processing and packaging firm says the ingredient has a neutral, slightly nutty flavour, a smooth texture and an off-white colour. It can be used at inclusion rates of between 2% and 7%, depending on the specific recipe.

According to Tetra Pak, the sunflower protein contains up to 50% protein as well as fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, and has an in vitro digestibility of 98%.

The company says these characteristics make it suitable for functional and fortified products.

Tetra Pak added that the ingredient can be incorporated into existing manufacturing lines with only minor process adjustments.

The launch forms part of a broader strategy to support customers moving into food supplement and nutrition segments through its Product Development Centres.

The sunflower protein is being positioned as an additional plant-based option for producers looking to adapt operations and explore new categories.

Tetra Pak global processing services and services solutions senior vice president Sasha Ilyukhin said: “Sunflower protein is a renewable and flexible ingredient that opens the door to new product opportunities without requiring major changes to existing lines and product formulations.

“With its adaptable flavour and nutritional benefits, it’s a great way for producers to expand product portfolios using current infrastructure, attract health-conscious consumers, and stay ahead of market trends.”
