Jost Chemical, a manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals for food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and other markets in the US, has introduced a new mineral co-salt ingredient, calcium magnesium citrate co-salt.

Manufactured by a proprietary process, the new ingredient comprises calcium and magnesium in a 2:1 ratio, the Missouri-based company said.

Calcium is believed to be important for bone and dental health, and is also known to help in maintaining a regular heartbeat and transmission of nerve impulses, while magnesium is vital for controlling the neuromuscular activity of the heart.

The new calcium magnesium citrate co-salt ingredient, which was launched at the SupplySide Marketplace trade show in New York, is available in two forms - a purified powder and a purified granular.

According to the company, its new co-salt can lessen formulation issues for mineral supplements, while eliminating solidification issues with improved compressibility.

Jost Chemical Co. market manager Andy Clutter told NutraIngredients-USA that dry blends of magnesium and calcium citrates pose significant formulation problems due to solidification when mixed with water.

However, the new co-salt, which already possess a positive new dietary ingredient (NDI) decision from the US Food & Drug Administration, remanis in suspension and reduces solidification, hardening and flowability issues, Jost said.

Also, the purified granular form of the ingredient has enhanced compressibility for tablets, the company added.

Separately, the chemicals company also announced its plans to add microencapsulation to its manufacturing capabilities, the primary offering of which will include copper gluconate and ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate and sinc oxide.

Founded in 1985, Jost Chemical is a manufacturer of high purity specialty chemicals.

Its portfolio includes a wide range of salts including ascorbates, carbonates, citrates, fumarates, gluconates, lactates, malates, nitrates, phosphates, succinates, sulfates, Ultra Pure Low Heavy Metals and Microencapsulated Products.
