US-based family-operated retailer Meijer is now accepting the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on its Meijer app, to expand access to healthy foods.
The new capability is implemented across all its Midwest stores, allowing SNAP participants to pay for their Meijer app orders using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
By accepting SNAP benefits, it is providing a more convenient option for customers to pay for groceries and is increasing access to healthy food and beverages, said Meijer.
The move comes in time for Midwest families who receive $40 each month in summer EBT benefits for each SNAP-eligible school-aged child to buy groceries.
Meijer grocery vice president Calli Schmid said: “Meijer is a family company committed to serving other families across the Midwest.
“By accepting SNAP benefits on the Meijer app, we are providing participants with more options and flexibility to shop for the groceries they need and want, while also reducing barriers that may prevent them from eating well.”
In April, Meijer doubled the value of its previous discount on select milk products and is now offering 40% off any brand or size of 1% and fat-free milk.
Meijer is the largest, and the only retailer selected to partner on Healthy Fluid Milk Incentives (HFMI) projects, established in 2018 to promote milk as part of a healthy diet.
The company is also helping SNAP participants by offering a 10% discount on SNAP purchases of qualifying produce, building on a waiver granted by the US Department of Agriculture in 2022.
In November 2022, Meijer started offering free Home Delivery to increase access to healthy foods and also started accepting SNAP benefits for Meijer Pickup and Home Delivery orders.
Last year, it was the first retailer to accept SNAP benefits through the Flashfood app that allows customers to purchase surplus close-dated food at a deep discount.
With the Meijer app, SNAP participants can now shop for fresh produce, meat, dairy, and pantry staples, and pay for them with their EBT card digitally or in-store.
They can link their EBT card to their Meijer account online or at any Meijer Customer Service desk and can use their EBT card as a payment method on the app.
