AlaskOmega - Sustainable omega-3 concentrates and fish oils

AlaskOmega, owned by family-run Organic Technologies, focuses on the quality of its ingredients to achieve maximum freshness and effect.

Family owned and operated, Organic Technologies manufactures a full range of MSC-certified AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates and natural fish oils from the company's NSF-certified GMP facility in Ohio. The company offers bulk omega-3 concentrates with up to 85% total omega-3 content in many popular eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ratios, in ethyl ester and triglyceride form. The company has also launched two new omega-7 ingredients, a 50 and 70% omega-7 concentrate, to add to its growing line of quality AlaskOmega ingredients.

A traceable and sustainable source

AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates are made from wild Alaska pollock caught in the Alaskan Bering Sea. Together with its fishing partners, the company is an integral part of a certified sustainable and traceable seafood-processing value chain using single-species wild Alaskan pollock, striving for full use of this valuable resource.

AlaskOmega enjoys a direct, transparent supply chain, making full traceability possible. Alaskan pollock is caught and quickly processed on board for human consumption, with the oil removed to ensure maximum oil quality and freshness. The oil is then shipped to Organic Technologies for further processing and concentration into AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates.

Gold standard: MSC certification

All AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates and fish oils are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), considered by most as the gold standard for sustainability certification. The MSC programme was developed in consultation with the fishing industry, scientists and conservation groups. The AlaskOmega brand proudly promotes its sustainability through the use and display of the MSC ecolabel.

The market leader in freshness

Fish oil can oxidise quickly if exposed to heat and oxygen. The total oxidation (TOTOX) parameter for fish oil indicates the amount of oxidation that has taken place and is a proxy for oil freshness. Fresh oil translates to better product stability, longer shelf life and optimal sensory characteristics.

To better reflect its market-leading position for oil freshness, Organic Technologies has reduced the maximum TOTOX limit for all of its AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates to five - that's more than five times lower than the TOTOX limit of 26 set by GOED, the standard for the omega-3 industry. Actual AlaskOmega TOTOX values typically range between zero and three, supporting AlaskOmega's status as the market leader for freshness.

In-house sensory panel assures optimal taste and smell

To ensure that AlaskOmega oils possess the optimal sensory characteristics, Organic Technologies recently implemented an in-house 11-member sensory panel, trained and certified in qualitative and quantitative methods to grade the organoleptic qualities of fish oil with high accuracy and repeatability. AlaskOmega omega-3 concentrates are rated on intensity of aroma and flavour during weekly taste panels, with a particular focus on AlaskOmega triglyceride concentrates.

New omega-7 concentrates

AlaskOmega has recently added two new ingredients to its line-up: omega-7 Palmitoleic 500 and omega-7 Palmitoleic 700, 50 and 70% omega-7 concentrates respectively. Pollock are naturally rich in C16:1 palmitoleic acid (omega-7), so AlaskOmega has isolated, purified and concentrated this valuable monounsaturated fatty acid to be a more potent and cost-effective alternative to sea-buckthorn oil, a traditional source of omega-7.

Omega-7 has been studied for its potential benefits in many important health applications, including heart health, anti-inflammation, insulin sensitivity, moisture replenishment of mucosal membranes, and anti-ageing benefits for skin, hair and nails.

Attendees of Vitafoods Europe in Geneva, May 2017, are welcome to visit AlaskOmega's stand, G20, to find out more.
