Market Insights
Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases characterised by the growth of abnormal cells beyond their usual boundaries that can then invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs. Cancer can affect almost any part of the body. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and estimated to account for 9.6 million deaths in 2018. By 2030, the global burden is expected to grow to 21.7 million new cancer cases and 13 million cancer deaths simply due to the growth and ageing of the population. According to a previous report, global cancer drugs market was valued at approximately $112.90 billion in 2015 and is expected to generate revenue of around $161.30 billion by end of 2021, growing at a CAGR of around 7.4% between 2016 and 2021.
Global cancer drugs market is primarily driven by growing incidences of target diseases such as lung cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer across the globe. Other major driving factors are increasing research and development on biological and targeted drug therapies for the treatment of cancer, coupled with the expiration of patents.
Ingredients Containing Cancer-fighting Properties
1. Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a polyphenol abundant in the skin of grapes, has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers. AICR lab studies found that resveratrol could inhibit cancer and tumour growth in lymph nodes, the liver, stomach and breasts, and it’s also been able to kill tumours from leukaemia and colon cancer.
2. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an excellent cancer-fighting nutrient. Vitamin E is fat-soluble and acts as a strong antioxidant, helping the body remove cell-damaging free radicals. Vitamin E can significantly decrease the risk for prostate, colon, and lung cancers. In fact, low amounts of vitamin E may increase the risk of cancer. It’s important to get enough of this vitamin daily from diet or supplements.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids have long been claimed to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Studies show that people who consume the most omega-3s have up to a 55% lower risk of colon cancer. Additionally, omega-3s consumption is linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women.
4. Rosemary Extract
In human ovarian cancer cells, some active rosemary constituents stopped cancer cell growth and killed existing cancer cells. There is a vast array of data supporting rosemary’s effectiveness against varieties of cancers including: leukaemia, colon, pancreas, breast, prostate, ovaries, cervix, bladder, liver, lung. Both rosmarinic acid and rosemary extracts decreased the number of heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which are cancer-causing molecules found in meats such as beef, chicken, pork and fish. In liver cancer cells, carnosic acid decreased cell viability from 83.05 to 2.5%.
5. Curcumin
Studies have shown that curcumin have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is widely believed to promote optimal liver function. In addition, there are hundreds of scientific studies demonstrating how curcumin inhibits the growth of various cancer cells including colon, liver, pancreatic, bladder, stomach, kidney, blood (leukaemia), prostate, ovarian, bone, brain, breast cancers, and even skin cancer. Curcumin triggers apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which is the body’s natural and necessary way of ridding itself from damaged cells.
6. Garlic Extract
Garlic is clinically proven to have antimicrobial, antithrombotic (reduces the formation of blood clots), and antitumor applications. Garlic has been demonstrated in studies to lower the risk of developing stomach, colon, prostate, and intestinal cancers. Garlic stops cancer cells by blocking the formation of and halting the activation of cancer-causing substances. Garlic is a strong antibacterial agent and has been shown to speed up DNA repair, kill cancer cells, and induce apoptosis. Garlic has also been studied for its sulphur containing compounds, which have been found to be abundant in phytochemicals and flavonoids – both powerful anti-cancer substances.
7. Green Tea Extract
Green tea is an excellent antioxidant, and studies show the properties of green tea help protect against metastasis of certain kinds of cancer. Green tea also contains chemicals called polyphenols that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A meta-analysis conducted recently, revealed the fact that green tea has the potential to reduce the risk of development of certain kinds of cancers in the mouth and lungs. It was observed that women who drank green tea were less prone to developing cancer of the food pipe.
8. Cinnamon Extract
Because of its antioxidant abilities, cinnamon may protect against DNA damage, cell mutation and cancerous tumour growth. Studies have revealed that the health benefits of cinnamon come from a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which can inhibit tumour growth and protect DNA against damage while also killing off cancer cells. This is especially true in the colon. Studies show that cinnamon can improve the health of the colon, which could reduce the risk of colon cancer.
9. Vitamin A
According to a review published in BioMed Research International, retinoids have been shown to block the growth of skin, bladder, breast, prostate and lung cancer cells in in vitro studies. High doses of retinoic acid can be toxic to cells, so it’s best to include it through food sources in your diet to prevent or suppress cancerprogression over time. Additionally, keep in mind that more is not always better, so moderate your intake to maximise the potential health benefits.
10. Rhubarb Extract
Rhubarb contains polyphenol chemicals that may kill or prevent the growth of cancer cells. Anthraquinones, one of the bioactive family of components in rhubarb root, are known to inhibit cellular proliferation, induction of apoptosis, and prevention of metastasis in cancer cells. Research suggests that “several bioactive anthraquinones of rhubarb possess promising anti-cancer properties and could have a broad therapeutic potential.”
