NuTek Natural Ingredients Pledges Support for the FDA’s New Voluntary, Short-Term Sodium Reduction Goals and Encourages Lower Long-Term Guidance to Make a Significant Health Impact

OMAHA, NE – On October 13, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance for voluntary, short-term sodium reduction targets for 163 packaged and prepared foods. The targets were first published in draft form in 2016 and decrease average sodium intake from approximately 3,400 mg to 3,000 mg per day, about a 12% reduction, over the next 2.5 years. The FDA has said they plan to issue revised, subsequent targets to further lower the sodium content recommendations in the future.
Lowering sodium consumption has been proven to reduce the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke and heart attack. Additionally, while more is being discovered about COVID-19, studies have shown that the most common underlying condition in the mortality rate of patients is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Overconsumption of sodium is the leading cause of CVD which is now the #1 cause of death globally.
