Bio-marine Ingredients Ireland (BII) is a recently launched marine bio-tech company located in Killybegs, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. BII is a joint venture between Irish fishing vessel owners and Norwegian partners who are experts in marine ingredients. BII will produce the highest-quality marine ingredients utilising the vast quantities of boarfish and blue whiting located proximate to the Irish coast. The main shareholders in BII are the key holders of these quotas which will constitute the bulk of the raw materials supplied to the BII facility.
The combination of an integrated supply-chain and state-of-the-art production facilities will enable BII become a leader in the supply of marine-based proteins, lipids and calcium to the international marketplace.
The biggest challenge facing marine ingredients companies today is access to long-term sustainable supplies of raw material. BII's access to pelagic species through our shareholders provides us with a critical competitive advantage over our competitors. Through our advanced hydrolysing process we convert raw material of moderate commercial value into proteins, oil and calcium.
BII's Natural Marine Ingredients from Ireland are unique because they are produced using whole fish rather than off-cuts so that consistent quality is guaranteed.
Quality: Unlike BII's competitors, who use off-cuts from the processing sector, we rely on two main species and therefore complete consistency of the end products is assured at all times.
Natural: Our products have no chemical additives and only top-quality food-grade enzymes and natural antioxidants are used.
Sustainability: BII has received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) approval for its blue whiting fishery. This accreditation means that BII will be the only market player providing 100% MSC-certified products.
Sourcing: With our factory just hours from the fishing grounds, BII customers can be assured of the freshness of the raw material at all times.
Traceability: Transparency of the origin of the raw material is crucial for food safety controls and with BII's shareholders being the key suppliers of the raw material, we are in a position to trace each batch of product back to the fishing vessel.
Continuity of supply: BII is owned by fishermen which means that we are in control of the supply chain and therefore there is no risk to the continuity of supply.
Our range of Natural Marine Ingredients from Ireland comprise potential ingredients for human nutrition, functional foods, nutraceuticals, premium pet food and animal feed. Supported by our scientific advisory board and scientific partners, BII can provide fact-based evidence to support our product claims for all our products.
Our Soluble Fish Protein Hydrolysate (FPH) from blue whiting is a free-flowing soluble spray-dried powder with a high protein content (greater than 90%) and less than 1% fat. It has a very neutral odour and slightly off-white appearance. This protein powder has an excellent amino acid profile and is instantly soluble in water. Our SPH is proven to have a number of bioactive properties including:
ACE inhibition activity
Blue whiting FPH found to have a significant inhibitory effect of ACE (Geirsdottir 2011). The inhibition characteristics increase with DH.
Blue whiting FPH found to have a significant in vitro growth inhibitory effect on two breast cancer cell lines (Picot, 2006).
Cudennec (2012) presents in vitro and in vivo evidence for a satiating effect of fish protein hydrolysate.
Nobile (2016) found it significantly improved body composition and in increased CCK and GLP-1 blood levels (hormones connected with satiety) but also decreased overall weight and measurements after 90 days.
Bile acid binding capacity
Blue whiting FPH has strong bile acid binding capacity. This capacity is directly linked to the ability to inhibit bile reabsorption in the ileum and therefore to lower cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. This study revealed that blue whiting FPH are suitable as ingredients in the formulation of cholesterol-lowering supplements (Perez-Gálvez, 2015).
Our Partly Hydrolysed Protein is very suitable for animal feed or pet food applications. This powder has a higher protein content than traditional fish meal and has the added benefit of a lower ash content combined with an excellent amino acid profile. It has a typical shelf life of 12 months. Trials conducted with dogs and pigs have demonstrated very high palatability and acceptability.
Our Fish Bone Powder is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorous and other minerals. For example, just 5g of Blue Whiting Bone Powder (BWBP) contributes the following to the daily diet:
Our fish oil will be the freshest oil on the market. Our technical process has been designed to ensure that excellent quality oil is maintained. From a human nutrition perspective, consuming our fish oil, rich in EPA and DHA, will benefit individuals from a number of perspectives *
