CMD Industries is a South African nutraceutical company specialising in indigenous, nutrient-rich brown kelp value chains and biomass-processing technology.
Pure marine habitats and largely unobstructed access to sunlight enable kelp to absorb uncommonly high amounts of minerals and produce many beneficial nutrients during their rapid growth cycles. CMD's kelp is harvested in an area of wild coastline that stretches over nearly 1,000km by teams of divers who assess plant size, health and suitability.
Harvesting only 10% of the available biomass - as permitted by the South African Government - ensures a sustainable supply. Kelp forests along the Western and Southern coastlines benefit from the absence of industrial effluent and pollution from commercial agriculture and heavy industries. This pristine, healthy marine environment provides a unique, diverse and flourishing ecosystem.
CMD employs specialised cell burst, low-temperature drying (LTD) and micronisation milling technology to process brown kelp. The bioavailability of nutrients and bioactives are enhanced by releasing phytochemistry and reducing particle size/increasing surface area for improved gut breakdown and absorption efficiency.
The cell burst process ruptures plant cells, freeing phytochemistry and resulting in a fine homogenous wholefood purée. Enzymes, vitamins, chelated minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, alginates (prebiotics), beta-glucans, bioactives (phlorotannins: dieckol/eckol, fucoxanthin, fucoidans and brassinosteroids), all at a nanoparticle scale, are liberated, while digestive fibres are retained. Process temperatures are kept to below 40°C and 100% of harvested material is used. Ultra-fine purées of less than 50µm are produced and then preserved organically. Keep it cool The LTD process results in flexibility in the powders, flakes and pieces produced, as well as to mitigate temperature denaturing. Smell, taste, texture, colour and rehydration properties are improved, essentially representing the fresh material minus the moisture, with an average moisture content of approximately 5%. CDM's dry kelp product range comprises:
A reduced particle size is highly sought after, so milling LTD kelp to lower than 40µm results in a powder with a consistency that is similar to cosmetic foundation powder. CMD's nutraceutical wholefood ingredient portfolio also includes Moringa oleifera, grapeseed, fruits, berries and vegetables, and mushrooms with improved properties.
CMD, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University and Cape Peninsula University of Technology, has embarked on an enzymic sequential extraction process aimed at isolating/ fractionising key compounds available in kelp, specifically:
Producing commercial volumes of kelp extracts, then expanding the use of the technology and processes to include other plant materials with unique properties, is a key objective.
Cell burst purées, LTD products, micronised powders, and future extracts will be suitable for use in:
CMD's direct connection to amazing seaweed resources also links it to the disparate coastal communities in which kelp forests are found. These communities and their livelihoods have borne the brunt of slow economic growth and diversity, poverty and poor fishing conditions.
Raising dynamic next-generation youth in these environs is difficult. Kelp demand, sustainability and part-processing at source will benefit employee households with increased, consistent income and create employment in the future.
Combining new technology with a sustainable superfood from a pristine environment, into a value-chain that benefits all, from the point of origin to the client-base, has, and continues to be, CMD's mission.
