Algosource provides microalgae based functional ingredients for cosmetic and nutraceutical companies. It is integrated on the whole microalgae value chain to develop technology and market innovations. Algosource produces and refines its own microalgal biomass on the French Atlantic Coast. This skill is based on fundamental and applied researches from its own R&D department, as well as from partnership with universities in France and Europe.
More than 25 years of microalgae expertise
Algosource is located on three sites on the French Atlantic Coast to foster innovations around microalgae's development. Our R&D department in Saint-Nazaire provides consulting services for private customers such as feasibility studies, design of microalgae production units, extraction technologies, scale-up feasibilities and techno-economic analysis. Our R&D department is also involved in several European projects for microalgae applications with universities, other industrial companies and research laboratories.
Algosource was the first Spirulina producer in Europe in 1993. In Assérac, we are producing high quality fresh microalgae on raceways. Algosource is also producing different sort of microalgae and is focusing mainly on Spirulina. Algosource is now working to obtain a European organic certification and continues to provide the highest quality of Spirulina on the market.
On its third site in Guérande, Algosource has developed a high level of expertise on Phycocyanin based products and cold extraction technologies. The patented process allows a complete preservation of fragile molecules such as vitamins and Phycocyanin. Thanks to its expertise, Algosource has developed exclusive extraction technologies to optimise concentration and obtain high value molecules to provide functional ingredients for nutraceuticals, cosmetics, sport nutrition and health applications.
Algosource's experience and expertise are confirmed by its double ISO 9001 and 14001 certification. Our products are compatible with professional sport activities thanks to the Sport Protect label, which ensure a non-doping effect.
Our expertise: microalgal biorefinery
Spirulysat is an aqueous extraction of fresh biomass produced by Algosource from its inhouse Spirulina. It is conditioned as a bulk ingredient or in individual sterile packaging for food supplement.
Considered as superfood, Spirulina is a cyanobacterium known for its high content of proteins, vitamins and minerals. Spirulina is eaten fresh, or found in the form of flakes, powder or pills. Its nutritional properties have been recognised by World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The world market is offering a wide range of qualities and prices of Spirulina.
Among the molecules of Spirulina is Phycocyanin, one of the water-soluble pigments of photosynthesis from the phycobiliproteins family. Phycocyanin is one of the only natural blue pigment recognised as food colouring. One of its main advantage is its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Spirulysat is the result of a very high biorefing extraction
process to obtain high concentration of Phycocyanin. It also reveals other powerful molecules of interest of Spirulina such as polysaccharides, minerals and vitamins. This cold extraction is the result of ultra and micro filtration, thanks to an exclusive patented process that allows to preserve all the molecules of interest properties.
Our ambitions for Health
Algosource has begun an ambitious initiative to obtain from the European Food Safety Authority a health claim demonstrating the antioxidant properties of Spirulysat. According to the mandatory standards, the process requires to carry out two double-blind clinical studies (Spirulysat vs placebo) on volunteers. Each study lasts on average 18 months and concerns 40 to 150 volunteers.
The first exploratory clinical study was realised in 2016 and has demonstrated the positive effects of Spirulysat on 40 volunteers. The second confirmatory clinical study will be launched this year to validate the first results, on a wider panel of volunteers. The design of this second step will be focused on finding even more accurate data regarding the effectiveness of Spirulysat in its antioxidant features.
Our expertise for industrial waste recycling
Algosource works with other public and private companies to demonstrate the viability and durability of a co-valorisation process that makes value of industrial waste CO2 and fatal heat by the production of photosynthetic microalgae. Several small scale projects have been completed with large industrial companies in France. The next step is a full size demonstrator in a Cement plant.
Our R&D department also works on the uses of this microalgae biomass for different purposes in the agriculture and industrial area: feed, bio stimulants, bio bitumen.
