OMAHA, NE – On May 5, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced new global sodium benchmarks for different food categories. This guidance builds on the work and experiences of countries and regions in setting targets for sodium levels in different food categories. These targets are part of national and regional efforts to reduce population salt intake, reduce the burden of diet and nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases and achieve the global target for a 30% reduction in daily salt consumption by 2025.
The WHO estimates that 11 million deaths globally are associated with poor diet, 3 million of which are attributed to high sodium intake. Additionally, while more is being discovered about COVID-19, studies have shown that the most common underlying condition in the mortality rate of patients is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Overconsumption of sodium is the leading cause of CVD which is now the #1 cause of death globally.
