Human milk oligosaccharides are important bioactive factors in breast milk. They have been identified as a key differentiating factor between human milk and infant formula. HMOs do not provide energy for humans, but instead perform many beneficial functions such as promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, blocking pathogens, and stimulating brain development. The ability of HMOs to nourish beneficial gut bacteria is important, as such bacteria not only inhibit pathogens, but also reduce the risk of allergies and chronic diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and obesity later in life.
HMOs are key components to narrow the nutritional gap between the gold standard of mother's milk and infant formula. Since the first infant formula with 2´-fucosyllactose (2´-FL), the most abundant HMO, was introduced in US in 2016, several infant formula manufacturers have added HMOs into their products in various markets like EU, US, Singapore, Canada and Russia. Clinical studies show that infants consuming HMOs had lower incidence of bronchitis, lower respiratory infection and lower medication use. In addition, infants supplemented with HMOs exhibited a gut microbiome that is closer to that of breastfed infants.
Not only babies, but also adults, can benefit from HMOs. The administration of 2´-FL in a daily diet increases the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria in adults. In addition, a growing body of research suggests that HMOs may prevent nosocomial infections, treat recurrent C. difficile infections, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Due to their specific characteristics, HMOs can also be used in nutritional and medical applications.
Besides HMOs, Jennewein Biotechnologie also offers rare monosaccharides such as L-fucose, sialic acid and D-mannose. These complex carbohydrates play an essential role in various metabolic processes, cell to cell communications and cell to host interactions. Research indicates that L-fucose, sialic acid and D-mannose prevent infections by acting as effective decoys and thus inhibiting the adhesion of pathogens to human cells. Besides being anti-infectives, L-fucose and sialic acid also exhibit anti-aging properties and thus are used for pharmaceutical research and development, in new applications with medical nutrition as well as in cosmetics as anti-aging agents supporting skin health.
Our dedication to HMOs production is well reflected in the proven track record of supplying the largest accumulated volumes of HMOs. As a pioneer, we have developed a unique HMO production process based on bacterial fermentation, which allows the industrial-scale synthesis of various HMOs including 2´-FL and lacto-N-neotetraose. In 2015 we received the approval in the US (GRAS), and in 2017 we received the novel food authorization for 2´-FL in the EU. Recently, we offer a blend of five different most abundant acidic and neutral HMOs at their natural concentrations. The blend includes 2´-FL, 3-
fucosyllactose, lacto-N-tetraose, 3´-sialyllactose and 6´-sialyllactose. This innovative combination allows makers of infant nutrition products to create formula and food that is closer to the gold standard than ever before.
